“The Birth of a Nation” has been set for an October 7 nationwide release via distributor Fox Searchlight.

The film stars Nate Parker, who also wrote and directed the drama. The film is based on American-born slave Nat Turner and the most successful slave rebellion in American history.

Parker stars alongside Armie Hammer, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earle Haley, Mark Boone Jr., Colman Domingo, Aunjanue Ellis, Dwight Henry, Aja Naomi King, Esther Scott, Roger Guenveur Smith and Gabrielle Union.

“Birth of a Nation” premiered at Sundance amid the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, and immediately attracted bidders until Fox Searchlight paid $17.5 million for rights to the film.

The October release comes alongside highly anticipated films like “The Accountant,” “The Girl on the Train” and “Gambit.”

Parker took a break from acting for nearly two years to work on funding the film, which was eventually produced by Parker, Kevin Turen, Jason Michael Berman, Aaron L. Gilbert and Preston L. Holmes.

David S. Goyer, Michael Novogratz, Michael Finley, Tony Parker, Jason Cloth, Jane Oster, Barb Lee, Carl H. Lindner III, Derrick Brooks, Jill and Ryan Ahrens, Armin Tehrany and Mark Moran are the executive producers
