Marvel and James Gunn announced Wednesday that Kurt Russell will appear in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

“My favorite movie as a small child was The Strongest Man in the World,” wrote Gunn on Facebook, “so I’m glad to announce that, yes, Kurt Russell has joined our cast and, yes, he is more awesome a dude than I ever could have imagined.”

The director did not say who Russell will play in the upcoming movie, but he is rumored to portray the father of Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill/Star Lord. In announcing the sequel, Marvel teased the guardians’ adventure to discover Quill’s true parentage.

Stars of the first film such as Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, and Glenn Close, will all appear in the sequel.

Russell’s past credits include “Escape from New York,” “The Thing,” “Tombstone,” and “Miracle.” Last year, Russell appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s western, “The Hateful Eight.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 will arrive in theaters May 5, 2017.
