Christian Bale has officially bowed out of Michael Mann‘s newest movie due to his concern that he wouldn’t be able to safely gain the amount of weight necessary for the role before filming starts.
The movie follows the life of Enzo Ferrari, and Bale was set to play the titular character, who was a a rather stout man in real life. This news presents a challenge to Mann who has has been trying to develop this picture for some time, and studios are scrambling to find another major star to take on the role.
The story will chronicle the rise of Ferrari as a businessman and is mostly set in 1957, a year in which Ferrari faced a host of personal and professional misfortunes.
Following Bale’s exit, however, it is now unclear if filming will be able to begin this Spring as it was originally planned.
