Last year, Alex Garland made a name for himself with the critical hit “Ex Machina.” The film was his directorial debut and now he has set his sights on his sophomore project, an adaptation of the novel “Annihilation” by Jeff VanderMeer.
The movie will follow a group of women that are sent out into an remote area known as Area X, which is abandoned and cut off from the rest of world.
Studios as well as Garland are looking at Tessa Thompson (“Selma,” “Creed,” “Dear White People“), Natalie Portman (“Star Wars,” “Black Swan,” “Thor“) and Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin,” “Deepwater Horizon“) to star as the main leads.
Garland is also set to write the film as well as direct as he did with “Ex Machina.” Filming is set to begin this year and the film will be released sometime in 2017.
