At least one of the Power Rangers has been cast. The Instagram account for the upcoming Power Rangers movie recently announced that Naomi Scott will be playing the Pink Ranger. Scott is known for acting alongside actor Matt Damon in recently released film The Martian. She also acted in Terra Nova. The 22-year-old actress tweeted right before the announcement, “I’m freaking out.” She then re-posted the photo on her own Instagram with a caption saying, “I’m done.”
Scott will take on the role originally portrayed by Amy Jo Johnson during the first three seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series. This was one of the most popular kids’ shows of the ‘90s and one of the longest-running live-action kids’ shows in U.S. television history. This series debuted on FOX in 1993 and went on to produce 22 seasons of the shows, 18 spinoff series, and two feature-length live-action films.
Recent reports have shown that a few other actors have been discussed for roles in the film, including KJ Apa (Shortland Street), Austin Butler (Arrow, The Carrie Diaries), and Mitchell Hope (Descendants).
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie will be directed by Project Almanac filmmaker Dean Isrealite. The script will be written by X-Men: First Class and Thor writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. The film is scheduled to hit theaters January 13, 2017.
