Historical Drama “In Sand and Blood” will star Russell Crowe

Russell Crowe will star in the survival drama “In Sand and Blood” for IM Global, set in Africa in the early 19th century. Moviegoers most likely know Russell Crowe from films like “Gladiator” and “A Beautiful Mind”.

The film “In Sand and Blood” will be fully funded by IM Global and will be directed by Saul Gibb. Gibb has previously directed “Suite Francaise” which starred Michelle Williams as well as “The Duchess” starring Keira Knightley.

“In Sand and Blood” is based on the memoir by the American sea captain James Riley which tells of how he and his crew were shipwrecked on the coast of the African Sahara and then captured afterward. The book was published in 1817 as “Authentic Narrative of the Loss of the American Brig Commerce” and republished as “Sufferings in Africa.”

Although many people don’t remember this book now since it was released so many years ago, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln called James Riley’s book one of the most influential texts he ever read.

Russell Crowe made his directorial debut in “The Water Diviner” this year and will be seen next with Ryan Gosling in Shane Black’s thriller “The Nice Guys” for Warner Bros.
No release date has been set for “In Sand and Blood” yet.
