With Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens about to come on December 18, more and more details are coming out about the characters that inhabit this film. Recently, Empire Magazine have released an issue dedicated to Star Wars, with two different covers: one showing the heroes Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and the others showing the villains Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie), and General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson). Yet despite these other characters, none have been more fascinating than Kylo Ren, the masked warrior with the crucifix lightsaber. It was assumed, including by me, that this character and the Knights of Ren were part of a faction of Sith. We were wrong.
“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke [Andy Serkis], who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side Of The Force,” director JJ Abrams told empire. So, the Knights of Ren will not the Sith, the old enemy of the Jedi Order. Instead, they will be a new enemy for this new film.
I don’t know what to think of this. On one hand, the exclusion of Star Wars’ premier villains has me a bit annoyed that Kylo Ren won’t be taking the title of Darth. On the other hand, it could be interesting to see a new mythology come from these Knights of Ren, especially since Andy Serkis’ character Snoke is confirmed to be a Dark Side user, probably in the same context as Emperor Palpatine from the Original Trilogy. In any case, we will just have to wait until Episode VII is released into theaters.
