Back in 2004 a major scandal occurred that involved the now former CBS Anchor Dan Rather. In September of that year Rather reported that at the time President George W. Bush had received special treatment while serving in the Air National Guard during the Vietnam War. This report Rather gave was based on documents that were suspected to be forgeries. Rather’s reputation became badly damaged and he ended up leaving CBS news in 2005. His producer Mary Mapes, an award-winning CBS News journalist ended up fired thanks to her involvement in the controversy.
Now a new movie called Truth directed by James Vanderbilt will officially tell this story. The movie has gotten its release date which will be October 16th. Truth’s screenplay will be based on Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power. Oscar Winners Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett will portray Rather and Mapes respectively. Joining them in the cast will be Topher Grace, Elisabeth Moss and Dennis Quaid.
