Terminator Genisys tried to play on the scale of Terminator 2: Judgement Day but it fell flat.  The opening battle was one of the best parts of the film.  It sets up a potentially interesting storyline.  A terminator was sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke).  If Sarah Connor dies before giving birth to John Connor (Jason Clarke), the rebellion would never happen.  So Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is being sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor from harm.

If the film had stayed this course, I think it would have been fine.  However, a short while later the film takes another turn and the characters are sent forward in time.  They meet up with John, who in this alternate timeline, is a terminator, and is the antagonist.  This twist was not what I was expecting but I was okay with John being a terminator.  This allowed the antagonist to be more interesting.

So if you’re on board with that plot twist, then so far the film should be okay for you.  However, then the romance attempts to come into play.  Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese are supposed to fall in love but you don’t buy it one bit.  The writing for their scenes is average but Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke have no chemistry.  As characters Sarah Connor is a badass.  Jai Courtney does not have the chops to be the lead.  Kyle Reese would have been a neat antagonist or even a terminator but as the lead, he did not deliver.

Then there is the series’ staple, Arnold Schwarzenegger.  He was solid in this film.  He brought a little humor to the stage and acted the robot, as he should.  Jai Courtney acted more robotic in the sense that he was more boring.  I will stop insulting Jai Courtney now.  I liked him in Divergent.  He is not lead material and I do not know why he was cast.

Overall this film bites off more then it can chew.  It takes a couple of interesting turns that if you’re not okay with, well, then you already dislike the movie.  If you are on board with them then you’ll find flaws elsewhere.  The primary one is that Jai Courtney is as stiff as a plank and has no chemistry with the badass that is Emilia Clarke.  The action is standard and is nothing you’ll remember.  I was expecting Terminator Genisys to be average and it actually pretty bad.
