Tom Cruise is feeling the need for speed.

With ‘Mission Impossible: Fallout‘ on the docket for this summer, Tom Cruise is now focusing his attention on another classic from his past, ‘Top Gun: Maverick‘. Filming on the anticipated sequel is now officially underway as the actor has shared the first image from the set on his twitter page. The photo shows the back of Cruise’s character Maverick looking at a fighter jet saying, ‘Feel The Need’.

The original ‘Top Gun‘ was a smash hit in 1986  financially grossing over 300 million dollars with just a 15 million dollar budget. While the first film was received with mixed reviews it has become a cult classic over the years. Along with Cruise making a return is Val Kilmer  reprising the role of Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky and Kelly McGillis as Charlotte Blackwood. Other then those, no other returning member of the original has been announced.

The sequel to the classic has been in the pre-production stage since 2010, and was halted once director of the original film, Tony Scott tragically committed suicide in 2012. But production is now back on track with a new captain at the helm in, Joseph Kosinski who directed Cruise in ‘Oblivion‘. After 32 years the ‘daredevil’ actor will look to prove that the need for speed is still at a high altitude.

Top Gun: Maverick will soar its way into theaters on July 12, 2019
