Lightstorm Entertainment‘s Jon Landau spoke at 20th Century Fox‘s presentation at CineEurope recently to speak on the four upcoming sequels to Avatar. Production on the films, which are all going to be stand-alones but together will form “an epic saga.”
Production on the films will begin on September 25 with performance capture. The production dates for the films have been changing for awhile now. In April they also announced on Facebook that the release dates for the sequels have been set. Landau continued to say the long delay since 2009’s original film is due to James Cameron working on all of the films’ scripts. Now that the four scripts have been finished, production is officially ready to begin.
In addition, Landau said that the industry’s best artists have been working hard to design the world of the new films, a feature that made the original Avatar so iconic.
The original cast will be returning for the sequels, as well as Oona Chaplin who has recently joined on to become involved in all of the upcoming films.
The films will be released as follows:
Avatar 2 on December 18, 2020, Avatar 3 on December 17, 2021, Avatar 4 on December 20, 2024, and Avatar 5 on December 18, 2025.
