This past weekend the Cannes Film Festival held their annual awards and this year resulted in a historic win in the Directing Category.
Sofia Coppola the daughter of the well known filmmaker, Francis Ford Coppola won the best Director award resulting in only the second time a woman has ever won that award at the Cannes Festival. The only other woman to ever do it was Russian director Yuliya Solntseva who won the award in 1961 for her film , ‘Chronicle of Flaming Years‘.
Sofia wins for her film ‘The Beguiled‘ which is a thriller that has an all star cast that includes, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Dunst, Colin Firth and Elle Fanning. Along with directing, Coppola also wrote the script and was one of the main producers of the film.
The rising director has been on the radar for quite a while and with this award she will be rewarded with more projects and is becoming a break out talent in Hollywood right now.
The Beguiled hits theaters on June 23, 2017
