After debuting in 1997, Dav Pilkey‘s irrelevant and sometimes banned children’s book series “Captain Underpants” is coming to the big screen. Entertainment Weekly once again got an exclusive first-look photo of the upcoming animation. Not only will the film be in 3D animation, but there will be hand-drawn 2D comic scenes and Pilkey’s ‘Flip-o-Ramas’ being in there.
The film centers on fourth grader best friends George Beard (Kevin Hart) and Harold Hutchins (Thomas Middleditch) who spend their time pulling pranks, getting into trouble, and creating their own comic series Captain Underpants. One day, when they are once again in the office of their tyrannical, toupee-wearing principle Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), George and Harold trick and hypnotize Krupp into believing that he is Captain Underpants.
There’s just one problem: George and Harold don’t know how to un-hypnotize Krupp, and soon he begins to run around town in his underwear as Captain Underpants. Making matters worse, a supervillain by the name of Professor Poopypants (Nick Kroll) begins a diabolical plot to have everyone renamed as ridiculous as his name. Now George, Harold, and an unpowered and delusional Captain Underpants must stop him.
David Soren is directing the film with Nicholas Stoller writing the script. It also stars Kristen Schaal as vindictive school secretary Edith and Jordan Peele as snobby teacher’s pet Melvin. DreamWorks will produce and distribute it. “Captain Underpants” will come out on June 2, 2017.
