In 1997, writer and director Luc Besson made “The Fifth Element,“ a film that is supposedly based of the French science fiction comic series by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières, Valerian. Now a new teaser has been released for Besson’s newest film, “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.“ While a lot of the special effects and aliens were shown, most of the teaser focused on the titular time-traveling agent Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and his partner Laureline (Cara Delevigne).
In the trailer, The Beatles‘ “Because” is playing in the background. Valerian and Laureline are introduced, along with the gigantic future world and alien culture that inhabit it. It also shows how much of a flirt Valerian is towards Laureline, who finds it completely annoying. The trailer then shifts into some actions scenes, showing off a platform-forming gun, fight scenes, and some space battles. There is also a brief shot of a mystery character played by Rihanna.
The film also stars Clive Owens, Ethan Hawke, and John Goodman. Europa is distributing the film both domestically and internationally. “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” comes out on July 21, 2017.
