After the box office success of DC Entertainment’s 2016 films “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad,” the cinematic universe looks to grow further with “Wonder Woman.” While the character, played by Gal Gadot, was introduced in “Batman v Superman,” this will mark her solo debut and the final film in the DC Cinematic Universe before “Justice League” comes out next November.
On Thursday night, the latest trailer was released for the film, showing more footage than previous teasers. The movie seems reminiscent of a similar superhero film “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Both films take place during times of war (“Wonder Woman” in World War I, “Captain America” in World War II) and walk the line between fantasy and historical fiction. The trailer stands out from other DC movies almost immediately with its luscious, colorful shots of the island paradise Wonder Woman previously lived. This is contrary to the bleak, colorless tones that previous DC movies have been criticized for.
The cast is also impressive with Chris Pine playing American pilot Steve Trevor, who crashes on Wonder Woman’s island and convinces her to leave to help fight the war going on in Europe. Danny Huston (rumored to be playing Aries) and Robin Wright (General Antiope) round out the cast and can be seen sprinkled in the trailer. “Wonder Woman” will be released this summer on July 7, 2017.
