Despite being a prolific character in real life, the biopic for Freddie Mercury, the lead singer for rock band Queen, has been in development hell. Actors like Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Whishaw up for the role of the iconic singer. Now, The Guardian is reporting that American actor Rami Malek has been cast to play the British Mercury in the biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody,“ named after Queen’s most iconic song.
Malek is best known for his star-making role as Elliot Anderson on USA‘s “Mr. Robot,“ for which he won an Emmy for Best Actor this year. Malek is also set to star in the independent film “Buster’s Mal Heart” and in the remake of “Papillion“ with Charlie Hunnam.
Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor will be producing the film. No director has been announced to take the reins of Mercury’s life, nor any casting for May or Taylor. No release date has been announced for “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
