After his film won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, director Steve McQueen has set his next project to be a heist thriller called “Widows.“ Variety reports this, along with the announcement that Viola Davis is the lead for the film. Gillian Flynn will write the script for McQueen.
Based off the 1983 British miniseries, the film centers on four widows of a group of bank robbers, who all died after a heist gone wrong. This forces the widows to complete the job that their spouses failed to complete.
Iain Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films will produce the film with McQueen. Jennifer Lawrence was also approached to play one of the widows, but could not due to scheduling conflicts. Film 4 and New Regency are financing the movie together. “Widows” is currently in pre-production, and has no release date.
