John Boyega was announced to replace Charlie Hunnam as the male lead for “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom.“ Now, Variety reports that pop singer and actress Cailee Spaeny will be the female lead in the sequel. Scott Eastwood is also set to star, with Max Martini set to return as Jaeger pilot Herc Hensen and Ron Perlman rumored to return as Kaiju organ dealer Hannibal Chau.
Spaeny is mostly known for being a teen popstar, and only has two acting credits in her name in the form of shorts. The first is the crime thriller Counting to 1000 as Erica and in the drama “The Shoes” as a cashier. Both released this year.
The film will take place years after the first “Pacific Rim,“ and will center on the son (Boyega) of Jaeger commander Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba). Steven S. DeKnight is taking over directing duties for Guillermo del Toro. “Pacific Rim: Maelstrom” comes out on February 23, 2018.
