Rebecca Ferguson is set to star alongside Hugh Jackman in Fox’s “The Greatest Showman on Earth.” Ferguson, who was recently seen in “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation,” has signed on to play Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind. Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya round out the cast of Hollywood’s first original studio musical in over two decades.
Michael Arndt penned the script for the film that Michael Gracey will direct. The project has been in development since 2009 and follows the story of showman P.T. Barnum (Jackman), who rises from humble roots and goes on to create the three-ring Barnum & Bailey Circus that later makes him famous. The film will also touch on his infatuation with “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind.
Production starts for “ The Greatest Showman” this fall, Chernin Entertainment and Laurence Mark are producing. Original songs for the project are being created by Tony Award nominees Justin Paul and Benj Pase. Kira Goldberg is overseeing the project for Fox.
Ferguson upcoming projects include “The Girl on the Train,” due out October 7 from Universal. She will also star in Daniel Espinosa’s “Life” opposite Ryan Reynolds for Sony and Tomas Alfredson’s “The Snowman” opposite Michael Fassbender and Chloe Sevigny for Universal. “The Greatest Showman on Earth” will come out on Christmas Day 2017.
