The character of singer and actress Zendaya is set to play a character called Michelle in Disney and Marvel Studios “Spider-Man: Homecoming.“ Now, The Wrap claims that the name ‘Michelle’ is a placeholder for the real character Zendaya is playing: Mary Jane Watson. It would seem that the former Disney Channel star may in fact be playing Spider-Man’s most iconic love interest.
Zendaya was already rumored to be playing MJ Watson after her casting was announced as a romantic lead for Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Kirsten Dunst previously played MJ in Sam Raimi‘s “Spider-Man” films, while Shailene Woodley was set to play the love interest before being cut out in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.“ In the comics, M.J. is most notable for being a redhead and for becoming Peter’s wife.
The film will also see the return of iconic characters Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) along with the introduction of Adrian Toomes/Vulture (Michael Keaton), Herman Schultz / Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), Phineas Mason / Tinkerer (Michael Chernus), Liz Allen (Laura Harrier) and new character Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon). It also stars Donald Glover, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Mando, and Martin Starr, and is directed by Jon Watts. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is coming out on July 7, 2017.
