Keira Knightley is set to lace up her ballet slippers again and star as the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s retelling of “The Nutcracker.” Knightley will share the screen with star Mackenzie Foy, who plays young protagonist Clara, dancer Misty Copeland as the lead ballerina in the film’s only dance sequence, and Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer, Clara’s mysterious uncle figure.
The live-action film, titled, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,“ is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.” In the story, one of Clara’s Christmas toys — a Nutcracker doll — comes to life and battles the evil Mouse King with seven heads.
Lasse Hallstrom has signed on to direct the upcoming film from Ashleigh Powell’s script. Mark Gordon is producing with Lindy Goldstein as executive producer.
Knightley was most recently seen in the Working Title ensemble disaster film “Everest” and will star alongside Will Smith and Kate Winslet in the New Line‘s dramedy “Collateral Beauty” this December.
“The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” will start production later this year but no release date is set yet.
