With the standalone “Aquaman” film to come after “Justice League, Arthur Curry (Jason Mamoa) is expected to face challenges and adversaries as King of the Seven Seas. The Wrap has broken the the main villain for the film is Aquaman’s greatest foe, Black Manta. No word yet on who will be playing the iconic underwater villain.

For those unaware of the character, Black Manta was first introduced in 1967 when trying to conquer Atlantis, but had little backstory to his motivation. His origin has gone through numerous changes, but the New 52 comic reboot Black Manta was an assassin who wants revenge against Aquaman for accidentally killing his father. Black Manta was also discovered to be the father of Kaldur’ahm, also known as Jackson Hyde, who would go on to become Aquaman’s sidekick Aqualad.

The cast will also include Amber Heard as Mera, an Atlantean outcast and Arthur’s love interest, and Willem Dafoe as Atlantean royal advisor Nuidis Vulko. James Wan will direct the film from a script from Will Beall. “Aquaman” will swim to theaters on July 27, 2018.
