After years of speculation and rumor, it looks like a fan-favorite Broadway musical will be made into a movie. Universal Pictures has announced that the Tony-winning musical, “Wicked,“ is finally going to made into a film. It has long been in development hell, with debate as to whether the 1995 book by Gregory Maguire or the musical would be the basis for the film. Universal will be making the film into a musical, inspired by the success of the musical film “Les Misérables.“
For those who do not know about the play, “Wicked” is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” that takes the point-of-view of Elphaba, the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West, her friendship/rivalry with Glinda the Good Witch, and the events that led to Dorothy coming to the Land of Oz. The musical, which debuted in 2003 on Broadway, originally starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba and Glinda.
Stephen Daldry, who directed “Billy Elliot,“ will be directing the film adaption. Composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz and writer Winnie Holzman will write the script, have adapted Maguire’s book into the musical previously. Marc Platt will produce the movie.”Wicked” is set to come on December 20, 2019.
