News has previously broke that actress Margot Robbie was set to play controversial figure skater Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya.“ Now, it has been announced by Variety that Craig Gillespie will direct the biopic for Clubhouse Pictures. Robbie will be producing the film through her LuckyChap Entertainment production company with producer Bryan Unkeless.
Although his feature debut was the critically panned “Mr. Woodcock,“ Gillespie gained praise the same year with the comedy drama “Lars and the Real Girl.“ It starred Ryan Gosling as a shy man who starts a romance with a doll he finds off the internet, and got the actor a Golden Globe nomination. Gillespie has also directed the horror remake “Fright Night,“ the Indian baseball drama “Million Dollar Arm,“ and the Coast Guard drama “The Finest Hour.“
The film will supposedly center on Harding and her husband Jeff Gillooly involvement in attacking Harding’s rival Nancy Kerrigan during the 1994 Winter Olympics. Robbie’s next features will “The Legend of Tarzan” and “Suicide Squad.“ Currently there is no release date for “I, Tonya.”
