Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has just announced that he will be playing iconic comic book character Doc Savage in the film adaption. Johnson announced this via Instagram, stating how excited he was to be playing this character. Shane Black is directing the project, with Anthony Bagarozzi and Chuck Mondry writing the script with black.
For those who do not know the character, Clark ‘Doc’ Savage was a famous pulp comic character created in 1933 by Henry Ralston, John Nanovic, and Lester Dent of Steet & Smith Publications. Savage is a scientist, adventure, and detective raised by a group of scientists out in the Arctic. Nicknamed “The Man of Bronze,” Savage has faced monsters, aliens, and robots. Doc Savage’s creation predates Superman‘s by a couple years, and was also a possible inspiration for Superman. Savage is even called a ‘superman’ by friends a colleagues. Currently, Doc Savage is being published by Dynamite Entertainment.
The new film will be produced by Johnson’s Seven Bucks Production with producer Hiram Garcia. Black said that the film will focus on Savage’s mastery of everything but his complete lack of social skills and boundaries. “Doc Savage” currently has no release date, but is stated for a possible early 2017 release.
