With the ending of their “Hunger Games” franchise and the coming of another “Now You See Me” sequel, Lionsgate is hoping to make its upcoming “Power Ranger” into another big franchise. However, could it be too big? As Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer stated to Variety, “We are really, really excited about the ‘Power Rangers’ movie. We could see doing five or six or seven [movies].”
Ok, while I think that Feltheimer’s positivity is great, 5 to 7 movies may be a bit much if we’re talking about the same team that’s going to be in the move. The whole point of “Power Rangers” as a TV series was the focus on the team, not individual members. So, spinoffs of single characters most likely never work if Lionsgate is trying to form the Power Rangers team into a cinematic universe.
However, there are other teams that spun off of the original “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers” series. Teams like the one from “Power Rangers Zio” would fit in perfectly as a spinoff. They probably would come after the supposed 2nd or 3rd film of this reboot. But to make 5 to 7 would probably mean that there would have to be 3 to 4 sets teams per movie series, depending on how many movies were in each new team. To extend this reboot into a 5 to 7 film franchise, this is very ambitious.
The film is directed by Dean Israelite and will star big name actress Elizabeth Banks as villain Rita Rapulsa. The Rangers are played by Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger), Niomi Scott (Kimberly Hart/Pink Ranger), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), and Becky G. (Trini Kwan/Yellow Ranger). “Power Rangers” will come out March 24, 2017.
