What would happen when the person you loved the most did not belong to you? That is the question faced by Australian lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) in the film “The Light Between Oceans.“ Based on the book by M. L. Stedman, the post-World War I story begins when the Sherbournes attempt to conceive a child, which ends with Isabel having a miscarriage. As they are attempting to process what has happened, a rowboat washes ashore, carrying with it a baby girl.
While Tom wants to give the girl to proper authorities, Isabel instead wants to keep the girl. The Sherbournes then decide to keep the girl, naming her Lucy. After a couple years of raising Lucy, something happens when the blissful family visits the mainland. There they meet Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz), a woman who lost her husband and baby girl Grace at sea years ago. This is when the Sherbournes realize that Hannah is Lucy’s biological mother. Now, the choice facing Tom and Isabel is whether to give back Lucy to her mother or keep raising her.
The film is written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, whose previous films were “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines.“ Touchstone Pictures will distribute the movie. “The Light Between Oceans” is set for a release on September 2, 2016.
