Despite “Star Trek Beyond” not releasing into theaters, rumors are spreading that Paramount is already planning the fourth film of the rebooted franchise. According to TrekMovie.com, Paramount has registered the name “Star Trek 4,“ while stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have already signed contracts to reprise their roles as Captain James T. Kirk and Spock in later films. Meanwhile, star and “Beyond” co-writer Simon Pegg has stated that the third film was not written as the end of a trilogy.
However, there is still a possibility that “Star Trek 4” might not happen. While the reboot of “Star Trek” was a massive hit, the followup “Star Trek Into Darkness” underperformed at the box office. If another underperformance happened to “Beyond,” then Paramount might easily pull the fourth film from schedule. There is also the fact that many actors are also involved in other franchises, such as Zoe Saldana in “Guardians of the Galaxy,“ Pegg in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, and Pine in the upcoming “Wonder Woman” and other possible DC Comic films.
“Star Trek Beyond” is directed by Justin Lin and also stars Carl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Sofia Boutella, and Idris Elba. The film will in theaters release July 22, 2016.
