It looks as though the Power Rangers have a face to their main antagonist. PEOPLE Magazine has revealed a first ever look at Elizabeth Banks as Rita Rapulsa, the main antagonist for the reboot of “Power Rangers.” In her interview with PEOPLE, Banks said on the costume and this character,”It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa. We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
I’ve gotta say, as a fan of the original series as a kid, I think that this change is drastic, but for the better for a modern audience. While I do cherish the original “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” show and its characters, even I found the villain Rita Rapulsa, played at the time by Machiko Soga, to be a bit cheesy and annoying. At least with this version’s design and Bank’s performance, hopefully the character is made more compelling. However, I do think that they made Rita a bit too green. And what’s with the ropes?
The film is directed by Dean Israelite, and will also star Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger), Naomi Scott (Kimberly Hart/Pink Ranger), Ludi Lin (Zach Taylor/Black Ranger), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), and Becky G. (Trini Kwan/Yellow Ranger). “Power Rangers” will release March 24, 2017.
