I’ve seen a lot of weird film in my time. Sometimes I went in having no idea what it was going to be about, other times I’ve seen trailers about the film. I will say this about the trailer for “Swiss Army Man.” Despite it’s strange premise, it looks somewhat charming.

“Swiss Army Man” centers on Hank (Paul Dano), a hopeless man stranded on an island. However, hope comes in the form of Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), a washed ashore corpse who may be Hank’s salvation off the island. As Hank and Manny make attempt to get home, hallucinations and farts make their journey surreal.

And surreal is right! To me, there are contradicting elements to this movie. On one hand, there seems to be a drama about survival and connection between human beings, even those that aren’t alive. On the other hand, there are a lot of fart jokes and multiple uses of Manny’s body. To me, I feel like the movies dramatic, heart wrenching moments will be dwindled down because of moments like Hank riding a farting Manny across the water. I’m also wondering if based on the trailer, seeing Hank in drags, that the living character will actually fall in love with a corpse. I really hope that this film does not get bogged down by its bizarre concept.

The film also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and is directed by Daniels (Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert). “Swiss Army Man” will release June 17, 2016.
