Academy Award winning actress Patty Duke has unfortunately passed away today at the age of 69. She died of complications with a ruptured intestine that Duke had suffered last Thursday.
Duke is best known for her portrayal of real life political activist Helen Keller in the 1962 film The Miracle Worker. She has starred in a number of noteworthy films including “Valley of the Dolls”, “Me Natalie”, “By Design” and “My Sweet Charlie” which was a TV Movie.
Duke began her career as renowned child star of stage, film and television. As her career went on she battled publicly with bipolar disorder, and later became a mental-health advocate.
Duke even had her own sitcom in the 60’s known as “The Patty Duke Show.” This popular ABC sitcom featured Duke playing both Brooklyn girl Patty Lane, and her Scottish “identical cousin,” Cathy Lane. It ran from 1963 to 1966.
Duke’s last film was 2012’s “Amazing Love.”
She is survived by her actor sons Sean Astin (“Lord of the Rings” Trilogy), Mackenzie Astin (“Wyatt Earp”, “Scandal”, “Rosewood”) her adopted son Kevin and her 3 grand daughters. She will be missed
