Journalism movies are pretty cool to watch. I enjoy watching films like State of Play, All the Presidents Men and even “Spotlight.” It’s always dope to watch stories come together and the places where it all goes down. With “Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” it’s an interesting concept looking at broadcast journalism in another country, basically some CNN type reporting. Tina Fey stars as a woman looking to change up her normal routine as a reporter and try something new. The movie is an OK feature not as great as the ones I mentioned early from days long past but not terrible.
Based on a true story, Tina Fey plays Kim Baker TV journalist who decides to change things up a bit and so she takes on a new assignment in Kabul, Afghanistan. Baker enters a world unlike her own and finds herself in the middle of an out-of-control war zone. Through the help of fellow journalist Tanya Vanderpoel (Margot Robbie), and photo journalist Iain MacKelpie (Martin Freeman) ,Baker learns how to become a successful correspondent for international news.
The film is not bad, decent actually, but not a stellar picture. It kinda loses you at times within the story and also its focus is a liiiiitle shaky at times. I was slightly confused as to weather this was gonna be like an actual dramedy or a full on comedy it was hard to tell.
Tina fey kinda ventures into some unknown territory of sorts for her. basically this is more serious work for her than her usual over the top comedies. She does a pretty good job here. Margot Robbie once again solid job here. She is getting around Rachel McAdams, Domhnall Gleeson, Leonardo Dicaprio, Will Smith now Tina Fey next Jared Leto I mean damn!. It was a nice surprise to see Martin Freeman in here. I had no idea he was in the movie. He sports a hella impressive Scottish accent and plays quite the pompous photojournalist. Overall nice job from him. The only predictable aspect of the film was having Alfred Molina as an Arab I figured they’d do that with him don’t know why but I had a feeling that would be the case
The directing is pretty decent minus the focus issue. Liked the cinematography and lighting brought a nice feel to the film. good dialogue from the script. I always enjoy journalism films and I will admit this was ambitious.
“Whiskey Tango Foxtrot” isn’t a must see film but it will satisfy your need for a decent movie if your not into the whole Deadpool popularity going on right now.
