Leonardo DiCaprio is regarded as one of the best actors of in Hollywood. He is known for his outstanding performances and his ability to perform a variety of roles from a Boston gangster and undercover cop to a poor man falling in love with Rose on the Titanic. People have adored him for years and begging the Academy to award him an Oscar.

Now that he finally won one, though, many want to know what’s next. What does this  win truly mean for DiCaprio?

Don’t get me wrong, I still cheered for DiCaprio when he won. This award should have been given to him a long time ago, however, this award does not cement his legacy. By this, I mean that the award doesn’t really do much for him.

An Oscar win does not guarantee a leading role, nor does it secure a larger paycheck or more fame. DiCaprio is in a league of his own and in fact, never winning an Oscar made him even more popular. He had millions of people demanding he be awarded an Oscar and I can’t think of any other time that has ever happened.

Every actor hopes to leave behind a legacy and while most do so by earning an Oscar, DiCaprio never needed to.

Actors like Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Sigourney Weaver, and Harrison Ford have never won an Oscar, but nobody is demanding that they win. I highly doubt you will ever see an online petition for Depp to win an Oscar. DiCaprio never needed the Oscar, he was already considered one of the best of all time.

Memes that once highlighted DiCaprio’s history of losses now stand as nothing more than epitaphs to a time that was. But pretend he didn’t win… Would his popularity really change?

It’s nice to win awards and that feat can establish an actor as a bona fide A-lister, however, DiCaprio had already established himself and is, in  a sense, above even the most prestigious award in the industry.

In the end, the award just another thing DiCaprio can put on his resume. While he used to let his work speak for itself, he is now nothing more than another A-lister who won one.

The award does not add or take away from DiCaprio’s prestegiousness, he is still the same person, but it doesn’t add any value at all, either.
