Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” just found its lead With the hit sci-fi and dystopian novel, “Ready Player One,” under works for its film adaptation, director Steven Spielberg has cast the upcoming picture’s protagonist. The role of Wade Watts will be played by Tye Sheridan.
Sheridan is a fresh face in the acting scene, and made his feature film debut back in 2011 in the film “The Tree of Life.” He then went on to star in indie-based movies such as “Mud,” “Joe,” and “Last Man Standing.” Sheridan will also be joined by fellow, upcoming actress Olivia Cooke (“Ouija,” “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”) and Ben Mendelsohn (“Animal Kingdom,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Exodus: Gods and Kings”).
“Ready Player One” follows the story of Wade Watts, a poor orphan living in a dystopian metropolis near Oklahoma City. Wade falls into the utopia of OASIS, a virtual universe riddled with puzzles about pop culture that grant ultimate power and riches to those who unlock them. As soon as Wade finds the first clue, the game of ultimate survival begins.
The novel was first published in 2011 by Ernest Cline, and has received both the Alex Award from the American Library Association and the Prometheus Award during the following year. Steven Spielberg joined the project to direct the film last March. Dan Farah and Donald De Line will be joining him as the producers of the movie.
“Ready Player One” will be coming to theaters on March 30, 2018
