After seemingly dead, recent news has indicated that “Pacific Rim 2” is being put back into development at Legendary Pictures. Sadly, the first film’s director Guillermo del Toro will not be returning to direct the sequel. The Wrap originally reported the news and stated that del Toro will continue to work as a producer on the film.
Taking over directing duties will be Steven S. DeKnight, who recently served as show-runner for Netflix’s “Daredevil.” There is currently no release date set for the sequel or if Universal will distribute. A script was originally turned into Universal last year but there is no word on if there will be any rewrites to it. The project’s revival seems surprising, with many questions were raised as to why Legendary Pictures wants to bring it back. It is speculating del Toro left the directing chair in order to make the film cheaper to produce. Del Toro was also been involved in picking DeKnight to take over the project.
