It looks as though yet another superhero trailer has been released hot on the tail of Captain America: Civil War. Warner Bros. has just released the second trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In the trailer, we begin with Clark Kent aka Superman (Henry Cavill) and Bruce Wayne aka Batman (Ben Affleck) meeting for the first time at a party. It is then that Clark discusses his dislike for Batman’s methods in Gotham City, while Bruce retorts that Superman, an alien who could destroy the world, was given praise in Metropolis. It is then that Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) comes in, making a comment at Clark’s unusual strong handshake.
It is then that the trailer goes into the conflict between both superheroes, who’s dislike is soon manipulated by Luthor, which culminates into a battle between the two heroes. However, it also shows Luthor with the body of Zod (Michael Shannon), as he uses it to create his own monster: Doomsday. As both Superman and Batman prepare for a final confrontation with Doomsday, a shield appears that is wielded by Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot).
Okay, so first off this trailer spoils way too much. It’s clear that somehow Superman and Batman make up to fight Luthor and Doomsday. Also showing how Wonder Woman is introduced is annoying. But my real pet peeve comes from Doomsday.
For those who don’t know, Doomsday is a monster introduced in the 90s comic The Death of Superman, who pretty much is the one responsible for killing Superman. Doomsday should not be in a movie with Batman, he should be in a Superman sequel. Doomsday in this movie is just too much especially when introducing Wonder Woman, Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and the Flash (Ezra Miller). This sort of problem of having too much to introduce a cinematic universe reflects what happened with Sony and The Amazing Spiderman 2, which they would later resell to Marvel.
I do like that they showed more of Lex Luthor. Although I was skeptical that Eisenberg’s take on Luthor would be a clone of his Mark Zuckerberg character from The Social Network, clearly there is something poetic and maddening to this Luthor. Besides the Entertainment Weekly picture, I’m glad that they at least did not spoil what Luthor looks like without his wig in the trailer. And I also think it’s a great idea that Doomsday was created by Luthor, but they should not have spoiled it in the trailer.
The film will also see the return of Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), and Diane Lane (Martha Kent), and will introduce Holly Hunter, Scoot McNairy, Callan Mulvey, and Jena Malone. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is set to release March 25, 2016.
