The “Fast and Furious” franchise has bred seven films and is currently set to release at least three more according to star Vin Diesel. Now Diesel has announced to Variety that Universal Studios and he are in the preliminary stages of developing “Fast and Furious” prequels and spin-offs.
“We’ve written out story lines for various characters,” said the 48-year-old actor. “We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”
It’s not clear yet who among the cast over the years will get a spin-off or prequel. Though, right now Diesel is focusing on the current films of the franchise, which he has promised will have a different tone from the previous installments.
“We have a director who is going to bring the darkness out and bring out the character,” said Diesel, in regards to the film franchise’s newest director F. Gary Gray. Gray and Diesel previously worked together in the 2003 action thriller A Man Apart.
“You can’t keep having every movie have bigger and bigger stunts forever and ever and ever,” said chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group Jeff Shell. “Eventually you have to really focus on the story. We’ll still have big stunts but bringing in this amazing storyteller is going to be great.”
Shell also admits that nothing lasts forever, but believes that after a decade and the success of “Furious 7,” the series still has potential to grow.
The series will be a departure from Gray’s hit musical biopic Straight Outta Compton. “I’m a fan of the cars and the world and after being on ‘Straight’ for four years, it was time to have some fun,” Gray said.
As of now there is no word as to when we can expect the “Fast and Furious” prequels and spin-offs but audiences can expect Fast and Furious 8 in theaters April 14th, 2017.
