Last year, the average movie ticket cost an average of $8.17 for an average customer. Now, the average rate for a movie ticket is $8.34—a record breaking price.

Typically, the largest increase in movie prices occurs in May and June, which makes sense looking at this year’s releases. Minions, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and Ant-Man were all released during this year’s price hike. With films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens blowing up social media and ticket sites like Fandango, it’s easy to see how quickly the film will dominate ticket sales on its opening weekend.

Many people predict that 2016 will lack the blockbuster, moneymaking films that 2015 has been dishing out. With a lack of viewership, ticket prices could really hike up and leave theaters in the dust.
