Hugo Weaving has signed onto the cast of Mel Gibson’s World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge opposite Andrew Garfield.

Weaving will play the father of Garfield’s pacifistic character Desmond T. Doss, a U.S. army medic who wins the Congressional Medal of Honor after saving dozens of soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. Also starring are Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer and Rachel Griffiths.

Filming on this true story-based pic began weeks ago in Australia with Cross Creek backing financially. Robert Schenkkan, Andrew Knight and We Were Soldiers screenwriter Randall Wallace penned the script.

The film will be produced by Bill mechanic’s Pandemonium Films and David Permut’s Permut Presentations alongside Bruce Davie and Paul Currie. Filling the role of executive producer is James M. Vernon.

Although there is no set release date for Hacksaw Ridge, a 2016 debut is planned.
