New casting looks to be underway as a new face is about to join the Star Wars universe. Latino Review reports that actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw has just been cast in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VIII. Directed by Ria Johnson (Looper), the character that Mbatha-Raw was testing for is meant to have strong chemistry with Episode VII: The Force Awakens‘ character Finn (John Boyega). She was shortlisted along with fellow actress Tatiana Maslany (BBC America’s Orphan Black) and Gina Rodriguez (CW’s Jane the Virgin).
Mbatha-Raw is primarily known for her breakout performances in independent films, such as the period piece Belle and the music drama/romance Beyond the Light. She also had a small role in The Wachowskis clunker Jupiter Ascending. It is also rumored that Academy Award-winner Benicio Del Toro (Sicario) is set to play the primary villain in Episode VIII. Star Wars Episode VIII is set to release May 26, 2017, with The Force Awakens about to release December 18 of this year.
