Nurse Jackie star Edie Falco has officially signed on the independent war drama film Megan Leavey which is based on a true story. The Golden Globe and Emmy award winning actress will be set to play the mother of the titular character. The story will focus on Leavey, an Iraq War veteran and Rex, her German Shepherd combat partner. Together, the duo served two tours in Iraq between 2004 and 2006, and were said to have saved many lives as Rex sniffed out many roadside bombs. While Leavey received her discharge from the Marines in 2007, Rex continued in the service for another five years. At that point, he was scheduled to be euthanized, but Leavey managed to prevent that from happening and adopted him. Megan Leavey continued to care for Rex, until he passed in 2012.
Leavey will be played by Kate Mara and directing the picture will be Gabriela Cowperthwaite. Jennifer Monroe, Mickey Liddell and Pete Shilaimon will serve as producers. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced as well as the official release date next year.
