Marvel Studios has reported that they are planning on having Taika Waititi direct Thor: Ragnarok. The Wrap first reported the news. Waititi has recently directed What We Do in the Shadows (2014) and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016). He also is already a part of the Disney family. Waititi scripted the upcoming animated musical Moana. Waititi is currently “in negotiations” with the Thor franchise. Waititi apparently beat out Zombieland and Gangster Squad’s Ruben Fleischer for the job.

Thor: The Dark World, the sequel to the first film, was released in theaters on November 8, 2013. Rotten Tomatoes ranked this film 66% and 78% of the audience liked it. Alan Taylor directs this film.

The newest addition to the “Thor” franchise will be based on Thor’s return to Asgard. His home realm will be threatened by the Ragnarok, which is the Norse apocalypse. Chris Hemsworth will return as Thor once again.

Thor: Ragnarok will begin filming next year for a late 2017 release.
