After hearing for months the castings of Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn learning of the plot based on a true story, as well as the hiring of Mel Gibson as the director, Photos of the production of Hacksaw Ridge has finally been released. the two photos show Gibson back to work in the directors chair for the first time in 9 years, and the other shows Garfield as Desmond T. Doss, the real life war medic who was the very first conscientious objector (someone who claims the right to refuse military service) of killing in the military. Also in the picture is Vince Vaughn who will portray Sergeant Howell and Sam Worthington who will portray the officer in charge of the unit Captain Glover.
This movie will tell Doss’s story back in World War II and his timing serving in the U.S Army during the Battle of Okinawa. Doss refused to kill and instead used his medical training to save dozens of soldiers. Doss received the Congressional Medal of Honor despite being a conscientious objector.
In discussing the film Gibson said “While production has only just begun, there is already incredible camaraderie between the cast, Not only is Andrew perfect for the role of Desmond Doss, the entire cast are an incredible mix of experience, depth and exciting up and coming talent.” Along with Garfield, Vaughn and Worthington the rest of the cast Gibson is referring to include Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer and Rachel Griffiths
Gibson is directing from a script written by Robert Schenkkan, Andrew Knight and Randall Wallace. Hacksaw Ridge will be out in theaters sometime next year.
