Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario had its limited United States release last weekend and has already been a success at the box office. Lionsgate is so pleased that a sequel is in the works.

The sequel will follow Benicio Del Toro’s character. Sons of Anarchy actor-turned-writer Taylor Sheridan is set to pen the script. Denis Villeneuve is attached to the film, but there is no word on whether he will direct the sequel.

Very few details have emerged about the film, but it will focus on Del Toro’s character Alejandro. Whether the film will be a prequel or follow-up to Sicario hasn’t been determined.

Sicario stars Emily Blunt as FBI agent Kate Macer, who helps a secret government task force to fight the war on drugs between the border of the United States and Mexico. Del Toro’s character Alejandro is a secretive and mysterious member of the task force, but seems to take on his role much differently than the other members. Sicario hits theaters nation wide October 2nd.
