Mary Poppins will be making her way to the big screen once again. It has been announced that Disney is developing a new original live action musical featuring the character. This new film will take place 20 years after the events of 1964’s Mary Poppins and will have elements from the other stories in the eight-book Mary Poppins series that were not featured in the original film. Marc Shaiman and Scott Whitman are on board to compose original songs and a new score while David Magee will write the screenplay. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall who previously directed Disney’s film adaptation of Into the Woods. It should be noted that, as depicted in 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks, Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers had famously refused to allow Disney to develop any more films based on Mary Poppins. For the new film, Disney and Marshall will be collaborating with P.L. Travers estate. The new film has also received the support of Mary Poppin’s co-composer Richard Sherman, who wrote such classic songs as Chim Chim Cher-ee and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. So far no release date has been announced
