As Disney‘s D23 Expo underway, it has revealed some news of the upcoming Star Wars spinoff film, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla). For starters, The filmmakers have released a cast set photo which includes confirmed stars Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything), Diego Luna (Elysium), and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), but also revealed that actors Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly) and Donnie Yen (Ip Man) are members of the cast. The expo also confirmed that Ben Mendelsohn (Netflix’s Bloodline) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) will be in the film with Mads Mikkelson (NBC’s Hannibal) and Alan Tudyk (Trumbo) also cast.
Also revealed was that this movie is now titled Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, with producer Kathleen Kennedy saying, “Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth [Edwards] is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.”
For this realism, Edwards has recruited Greig Fraser (Zero Dark Thirty, Foxcatcher) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan) to be his special effects supervisor. This Star Wars flick has begun production in Pinewood Studios, and will center on a group of Rebels who make plans to steal the plans to the Death Star. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will release December 16, 2016.
