This seems to be the year of remakes and reboots, now Warner Bros. is at it again and their next fantasy project is pushing the envelope. At the turn of the millennium in 2000 someone had the grand idea of turning one of the world’s most famed role playing games into a blockbuster film. Unfortunately, poor execution left producers of the original Dungeons and Dragons film starring Jeremy Irons, Marlon Wayans, and Thora Birch minus $12 million after global sales and the only award this film won was #39 in Empire Magazine’s 2010 list “Worst Films of All-time”.

However, producer Allan Zeman believes with Warner Bros. heading this new project Dungeons and Dragons will receive a proper launch into the film industry. Zeman was also a producer of the original Dungeons and Dragons movie. This will be Warner Bros. second attempt in remaking the Dungeons and Dragons film. Warner Bros. had intended to begin production several years ago, but legal complications between Hasbro – who own the game, Universal Pictures – which was in partnership with Hasbro at the time, and Sweetpea Entertainment – the producers of the original Dungeons and Dragons movie halted filming. Recently the four companies ended their legal dispute with some kind of arrangement that was not disclosed to the public.

Acting as executive producer is Roy Lee . The script for this untiled production is being written by David Leslie Johnson, writer of Mob City, Wrath of the Titans, and Orphan just to name a few. It is believed that Johnson chose The Forgotten Realms as the primary setting for the movie. The Forgotten Realms is the most popular of places in the Dungeons and Dragons Universe.

To non-fans of D&D role play this idea may seem farfetched, but there is room for another fantasy franchise in the film industry. While the Marvel universe remains active and productive, the Harry Potter franchise ended four years ago. If “done right” as producer Zeman assures it will be, Dungeons and Dragons could become the next big fantasy outlet apart from superheroes and Lord of the Rings. There is currently no release date for this untitled production.
