Oscar winner Taylor Hackford has decided to direct Robert De Niro’s drama The Comedian. The Comedian is based on Art Linson’s script and is planning to start production in New York early next year. Hackford has directed a number of films including Dangerous Liaisons, Ray (which earned him his second and third Oscar nominations), Parker, Company Town, and the 1982 classic film An Officer and a Gentleman. Art Linson will produce with Courtney Solomon and Mark Canton who are also both financing. Linson is known for producing Fight Club, The Runaways, and Into the Wild. De Niro will play an aging insult comic. His material is written by Comedy Central Roast mainstay Jeff Ross. De Niro will be seen later this year in theaters in The Intern alongside Anne Hathaway. He will also be seen in David O. Russell’s Joy where he will be playing the father of Jennifer Lawrence’s character. Casting for The Comedian is still underway. De Niro and Linson have been trying to pull together this project for years now. There is not yet a release date for this film.
