The cat’s out of the bag, unfortunately the bag was already at the bottom of the river. Julia Roberts is set to star in Mother’s Day, directed by Gary Marshall. This will be Julia Robert’s fourth collaboration with Marshall, the first being Pretty Woman followed by Runaway Bride and Valentine’s Day. While his first two romantic holiday themed comedies, Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve did well in the box office, reviews for both films were laughable to say the least.
New Year’s Eve: “It’s like channel surfing when there’s nothing on but crap.” – Sean Burns Philadelphia Weekly.
Valentine’s Day: “Gary Marshall, how could you? You have made a mockery of a movie that bears the name of my birthday. I take this as a personal affront.” – Linda Cook KWQC-TV Iowa
Unlike Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve, Mother’s Day was written by Anya Kochoff-Romano – writer of Monster-In-Law and Lily Hollander. Still, the basic premise for the film is quite similar to the previous two. By way of happy coincidences the lives of several mothers become intertwined as Mother’s Day approaches. It appears Robert’s role in this script is secure; however, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, and Jason Sudeikis are all still in negotiations for the film.
Producing are Wayne Rice, Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures’ , Kevin Frakes of Palm Star Media, and executive producer Ankur Rungta also with Palm Star Media. Filming for Mother’s Day will begin next month in August. Will Mother’s Day be Marshall’s third offense or will it be a hit?
