There were two films in the 1980’s that established Tom Cruise as a star in Hollywood, 1983’s Risky Business and 1986’s Top Gun. After almost 29 years Top Gun 2 has finally been confirmed to be in the works according to Variety.  Skydance CEO David Ellison didn’t say Tom cruise name when announcing the anticipated sequel, but he did say that the character Maverick will have an “amazing role” in the film. “There is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,”

Top Gun was about a young  Lieutenant/Naval Aviator named Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who served aboard the USS Enterprise Aircraft Carrier. Him and his Radar Intercept Officer Nick “Goose” Bradshaw are given the chance to hone their skills at the Navy Fighter Weapons School at Miramar out in San Diego, California. The film was the highest grossing film of 1986 as it made $353,816,701 worldwide. The band Berlin won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song “Take My Breath Away” which was featured on the soundtrack for the film.

Despite his name not being mentioned Tom Cruise is expected by many to return to the sequel film. As of now no word has been said on the rest of its cast nor who will direct the film.
